Squash Tournament

Thanks for your interest in the Newton Perkins' Squash Tournament 2011. Here are a few of the details:-

The Tournament has been running for 37 years. The main Tournament was won last year by Cushman & Wakefield, whilst GVA won the plate.

It is a team competition. For a match you field a team of three players (drawn from a squad of up to five). Some teams have experienced players, some field players who enjoy the game and compete well at the beers afterwards!! Initial round robin matches involve 4 to 5 matches played during January/February (there is normally a total of around 30 teams entering -a list of last year's entrants is below). Qualifiers from the groups go on to contest further rounds and compete for a main and plate trophy. The finals are played in London in late April/early May (usually at the RAC in Pall Mall). For details of the final last year click here.

The Tournament is for Greater London based property and surveying businesses. It is also open to property departments of legal practices and financial institutions. For non-property organisations two of three players in any given match must be property department members. All players must be bona fide members of the firm (including partners/directors/employees and consultants). There is an entry fee of £150 per firm.

If you do not have a London squash club there are two Fitness First clubs in London who allow competing teams to use their courts (subject to payments of the clubs' guest fee charges).

If your firm are a new entrant please confirm your possible interest to David Alcock by 14th November, following which we will need information on your team and confirmation of the five nominated players (though you can change the order following notification). If your firm have previously competed and you wish to re-enter please go directly to the entry form.

Cushman/GVA triumph in squash finals

The 10th Anniversary of the Newton Perkins' Squash Tournament (supported by the Estates Gazette) witnessed two of the most compelling match ups in the Tournament's history. London's RAC Club was the venue for the matches pitting GVA Grimley (2001/2 winners) and KPMG Real Estate for the Plate trophy with King Sturge pitched against reigning champions Cushman & Wakefield seeking an unprecedented 4th successive Trophy title.

In the Plate trophy, City agent, Jeremy Prosser was playing KPMG's Matthew Webster. Prosser's unconventional style proved a heady cocktail with the GVA man winning 3-1. KPMG no.2, Andrew Nicholson then steadied the ship against GVA stalwart, Alex Stevens to win 3-1 leaving it to the No 1's James Maskey of GVA and KPMG's Duncan Elliott. Maskey's youthful energy proved crucial and his 3-0 win gave the Plate spoils to GVA.

Meanwhile on the adjacent court, Ben Gamble of King Sturge set off at a high tempo winning the first game against Cushman & Wakefield no.3 Ollie Slack. However, Slack with the experience of five previous final appearances, dug deep to rescue the match 3-1. Cushman new boy no.2, Matt Sampson then produced the evening's dominant performance to win 3-0 against King Sturge's Matt Connor. The trophy won, Cushman no.1 Marcus Hayes was able to produce his finest stroke play to run out asimilar score line against the emerging talent of King Sturge's, Paul Sweeney.

To a packed committee room, Guest of Honour, EG Editor Damian Wild, presented the trophies to the competing teams.
