Professional pride
was on the line at London's RAC Club as surveyor took on
solicitor in the finals of the Newton Perkins Squash
Tournament 2005 (supported by the Estates Gazette), now
celebrating the 30th year of competition.
4 months of play
had whittled 30 teams down to the 4 finalists. In the plate
final, a youthful Knight Frank line up was matched against the
wiles of an experienced Beachcroft Wansbroughs team. Youth
quickly assumed ascendancy to give Knight Frank an
unassailable 2-0 lead before Beachcroft's number one, Ben
Nicholson, reduced the eventual deficit to 2v1 in favour of
Knight Frank.
The main
tournament finalists, Cushman Wakefield Healey & Baker and
Berwin Leighton Paisner were well known to each other after
playing out last year’s plate final. Berwin's initial 1-0 lead
courtesy of Peter Rudolf’s efforts over Simon O’Reilly was
pegged back in a stirring second string match between Jon
Steel and Shayne Jackson, eventually shaded by Steel. The
destination of the honours therefore rested on a knife edge
number one match. Despite titanic effort by Cushman’s David
Hume, cheered on by enthusiastic home support, the match was
eventually settled 3-1 by the supreme control of Berwin’s
Andrew Edwards and giving the solicitors the main trophy
laurels with an overall 2v1 win.
A reception
followed in the elegant surroundings of the RAC’s committee
room .James Bowdidge, Chief Executive of The Property Merchant
Group responded on behalf of the guests and supporters and
presented the trophies.
