The Newton Perkins
Squash Tournament 2007 reached its final evening at London's RAC Club in Pall
Mall. In the main "Trophy" tournament Savills ("Plate" tournament winners in
2006) were pitted against Cushman & Wakefield, the Tournament's most successful
side over its 32 year history. The
Plate Tournament offered Knight Frank the chance to step
up from their 2006 runner-up status in their match
against Bank of Scotland Corporate.
Bolstered by rousing support, Savills' Richard Winter
adapted quickly to the humid court conditions and lively
bounce of the RAC to outplay Cushman & Wakefield's Simon
O'Reilly and claim early advantage. The match of the
evening then followed between old college mates Ollie
Slack of Savills and Jon Steel of Cushmans. Steel, with
the experience of previous finals established early
ascendancy, but Slack clawed back an 8-4 deficit to win
the first game; then power the way to a 3-0 victory. The
words "dead rubber" rather bypassed Cushman &
Wakefield's determined No.1, David Hume, (fresh off an
overnight plane from the US!). He valiantly took the
first game against Savills "most improved player", Argie
Taylor. Taylor then showed his form and energy, dragging
Hume all around the court, leading to a deserved 3-1 win
for the Savills man....and securing a clean sweep 3-0
victory to take the Trophy to Grosvenor Hill.
A
keenly fought "Plate" match was unfolding simultaneously
on the next door court. Knight Frank's Ollie Broom
adopted his remarkable ambi-dextrous strokeplay to
outfox Bank of Scotland's No.3, Denis Knockton. The
Bank's veteran No.2, Nick Boardman, then steadied the
ship and pulled the contest back to all square against
Knight Frank's, Angus Baillie. KF's No.1, Simon Austen
raced into a 2-0 lead before being pegged back to 2-1 by
Stephen Duffett. Not to be denied, Austen won the last
in a tight, technical game and to the delight of the
squash purists. Plate Honours to Knight Frank, 2-1.
Following completion of the matches, Guest of Honour,
Sir John Ritblat (a keen Tournament participant for many
years) presented the trophies and regaled the capacity
audience with reminiscences from his long associations
with squash and business.
