London's RAC Club hosted the finals of the
10th Newton Perkins' Squash Tournament on
April 29th.
In a replay of their 2009 final, Cushman &
Wakefield and Jones Lang LaSalle were
matched up for the Main Trophy, whilst the
Plate Trophy (featuring first round league
losers) saw Savills play AXA Real Estate.
These final four teams had won through from
the original thirty entrants.
In
the Plate match AXA, making their first
final's appearance appeared to have the
upper hand in the third string match as
James Owen battled back against Freddie
Corlett to level 2 v 2 before the youth of
the Savills player came through.
The second string match was finely balanced
at 1 v 1 before Savills' Argie Taylor again
pulled away to defeat Richard Pinnock.
Evergreen AXA captain, Paul Coley, battled
ferociously but fell to the wiles of
Savills' No.1, Richard Winter for the
Savills team to retain their 2009 Plate
Trophy.
The Main Trophy match started well for the
JLL at No.3 with a rapid fire 3 v 1 win for
the Adam Draper against Cushman's John
Prestwich (a last minute stand-in for
volcano "downed" David Hume). JLL's Will
Evers continued the blistering start but
Ollie Slack's hard hitting saw him come back
to square the match for Cushman's team,
setting up the No.1 strings to decide the
2010 Trophy.
JLL's Graham Lind and Cushman's premier
league player, Marcus Hayes, showed
nerveless quality and gripped the
spectators' attention in the match lasting
well over an hour. Lind carved out a 2 v 1
game position but Hayes showed spectacular
reserves to dig deep to come back to win 3 v
2 and seal the honours for the Cushman side.
Guest of Honour, Richard Balfour-Lynn
presented the trophies in the RAC Committee
Room afterwards.
