Mayor intervenes at Fruit and Wool Exchange

The Mayor of London has intervened following Tower Hamlets' rejection of the planned re-development of the Fruit and Wool Exchange, E1. The 300,000 sq ft re-development, proposed by Exemplar, has been described by Boris Johnson as in line with planning policy, and will also generate employment.

The initial refusal by Tower Hamlets was based on the required demolition of historic buildings on the site, a move opposed by a campaign led by TV historian Dan Cruickshank.
