So the long awaited Budget has now been and gone and for business rates there was a quick mention of lower multiplier for Retail Hospitality & Leisure, paid for by a higher multiplier on the most valuation properties with a Rateable value of £500,000 or more and of a transitional relief scheme to limit large increases in liability all to come into force from 1st April 2026.
However, behind the headlines Retail, Hospitality and Leisure occupiers maybe disappointed that their discount from the standard multiplier is only 5p (along way short of the 40% discount this year) and large occupiers with a rateable value of £500,000 or more maybe slightly relieved that the addition is only 2.8p (for now).
The small multiplier will be set at 43.2p, standard multiplier 48p and large (Rateable Value £500k plus) 50.8p
Retail Hospitality and Leisure the small multiplier will be 38.2p, standard multiplier 43p
For those in London there will be additions for Crossrail of 2p for those with a Rateable Value of £75,000 or more and for those in the City of London they will also have the City of London supplement applied currently 2.2p.
We now await the release of the Draft 2026 Rateable Values from the Valuation Office Agency which will determine the winners and losers in the multiplier changes.
